Créée en 2002, l'Alliance internationale de l'édition indépendante est un réseau international composé de plus de 900 maisons d'édition et collectifs d'éditeur·rices dans 65 pays. L'Alliance a créé un Observatoire de la bibliodiversité, qui rassemble les recherches, analyses et outils produits au sein de l'Alliance, à destination des professionnel·les et des pouvoirs publics. L'Alliance organise et anime des rencontres professionnelles internationales et des ateliers thématiques permettant aux éditeur·rices indépendant·es de différents continents d'échanger et d'initier des collaborations. L'Alliance soutient également des projets éditoriaux internationaux (coéditions solidaires, traductions, cessions de droits…), pour une plus grande circulation des textes et un accès aux livres le plus équitable possible pour les lecteur·rices. En 2022, l'Alliance a lancé une initiative inédite : la première édition de Babelica, le salon international de l'édition indépendante, qui se déroule une fois par an en ligne, le 21 septembre (Journée internationale de la bibliodiversité).
